ObserviX Engagement Scoring System
Understanding How We Measure Visitor Engagement
Executive Overview
ObserviX's engagement scoring system is designed to answer one critical question: Which visitors are most likely to become customers?
Our system analyzes every interaction a visitor has with your website—from their first click to final conversion—and assigns a numerical score that reflects their level of interest and purchase intent. This score helps your marketing and sales teams prioritize their efforts and budget on the visitors who matter most.
What is Engagement Scoring?
Engagement scoring is a methodology that assigns a numerical value (0-100) to each website visitor based on their behavior. Think of it as a 'heat map' for your audience—the higher the score, the 'hotter' the lead.
What We Measure:
- Number of sessions (how often they visit)
- Time spent on your site
- Pages viewed and depth of exploration
- High-value page visits (pricing, demo, contact pages)
- Conversion events (form submissions, purchases)
- Recency of activity
The 10-Band Scoring System
ObserviX organizes all engagement scores into 10 distinct bands, from 0 (bounce/no engagement) to 9 (champion/advocate). Each band represents a specific level of visitor engagement and helps you segment your audience with precision.
Engagement Bands at a Glance
| Band | Score Range | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 0-2 | Bounce: Visitor left immediately with minimal engagement. Very low interest. |
| 1 | 3-10 | New Active: First meaningful interaction. Visitor showed some interest but still exploring. |
| 2 | 11-20 | Interested: Demonstrating clear interest, viewing multiple pages, spending time on site. |
| 3 | 21-30 | Returning: Multiple visits, building familiarity with your brand and offerings. |
| 4 | 31-45 | Engaged: Actively engaged with your content, frequent visits, exploring key pages. |
| 5 | 46-60 | Qualified: Strong interest signals, viewing pricing/demo pages, likely considering purchase. |
| 6 | 61-75 | Hot Lead: High purchase intent, viewing conversion pages, ready for sales outreach. |
| 7 | 76-85 | Very Hot: Extremely high engagement, multiple conversion signals, immediate action recommended. |
| 8 | 86-95 | Customer: Completed a purchase or primary conversion. Focus on retention and upselling. |
| 9 | 96-100 | Champion: Multiple purchases, highest engagement, brand advocate. VIP treatment recommended. |
Visitor Statuses Explained
While bands represent numerical ranges, statuses give you a business-friendly label that describes where each visitor is in their journey. Statuses help your team quickly understand who they're dealing with and what action to take.
Core Statuses
Unknown (Score: 0)
No data available yet. This is typically a brand-new visitor who just landed on your site.
New (Score: 0-10)
First-time visitor showing initial interest. They're just getting to know you.
Returning (Score: 11-30)
Visitor came back at least once. They remember you and want to learn more.
Engaged (Score: 26-45)
Actively exploring your content with multiple sessions and page views. Building a relationship.
Qualified Lead (Score: 41-60, Email captured)
Strong interest signals and you've captured their contact information. Ready for nurturing.
Hot Lead (Score: 61-80)
High purchase intent, viewing conversion-focused pages. Sales team should act quickly.
Customer (Score: 81-95, 1+ conversions)
Completed their first purchase or primary conversion. Focus shifts to retention.
Returning Customer (Score: 86-97, 2+ conversions)
Made multiple purchases. Demonstrating loyalty and satisfaction.
Champion (Score: 90-100, 3+ conversions)
Your best customers. Multiple purchases, highest engagement, likely to refer others. Treat as VIPs.
Risk Statuses (Post-MVP)
At Risk (30+ days inactive)
Previously active customer who hasn't engaged recently. Needs re-engagement campaign.
Churned (90+ days inactive)
Customer who has stopped engaging for an extended period. Win-back campaign needed.
Reactivated (Returned after 90+ days)
Previously churned customer who came back. Opportunity to rebuild the relationship.
Temperature Levels: Precision Within Each Band
Temperature adds another layer of precision to help you prioritize visitors within the same band. A visitor at the top of Band 4 (score 44) is 'hotter' than someone at the bottom (score 31), even though both are in the 'Engaged' band.
Four Temperature Levels:
❄️ Cold (Bottom 25% of band)
Lower engagement within their band. Low priority for immediate action.
☀️ Warm (Middle 50% of band)
Moderate engagement. Standard nurturing and follow-up appropriate.
🔥 Hot (Top 20% of band)
High engagement within their band. Increased priority for marketing and sales.
🌋 Very Hot (Top 5% of band)
Highest engagement possible. Immediate action required—these are your most valuable prospects.
How Temperature Guides Action
Temperature determines urgency and channel priority. A 'Very Hot' visitor in Band 6 (Hot Lead) should receive immediate sales outreach across all channels, while a 'Cold' visitor in the same band might be added to a nurture sequence.
How Visitors Progress Through the System
Visitor progression isn't always linear. Someone can jump from New to Hot Lead if they show strong purchase intent signals quickly. Here are the typical progression paths:
Typical Journey: Exploration to Purchase
Unknown → New → Returning → Engaged → Qualified Lead → Hot Lead → Customer
This is the most common path for B2C visitors who need time to research and consider before purchasing.
Fast-Track Journey: Ready to Buy
New → Hot Lead → Customer
Some visitors arrive with high intent—perhaps they were referred or already familiar with your brand. These visitors skip intermediate stages.
Customer Loyalty Path
Customer → Returning Customer → Champion
After the first purchase, customers can ascend to higher loyalty levels through repeat purchases and continued engagement.
Risk Path (Post-MVP)
Customer/Returning Customer → At Risk → Churned
Without continued engagement, customers can move into risk statuses. Early detection allows you to intervene with re-engagement campaigns.
What This Means for Your Marketing Team
Prioritize Your Budget
Not all visitors deserve equal budget allocation. Focus ad spend on visitors in higher bands (5-7) and with Hot/Very Hot temperatures. These are your highest-probability conversions.
- Band 0-2: Minimal budget—educational content only
- Band 3-5: Moderate budget—nurture and build relationships
- Band 6-7: High budget—aggressive retargeting, sales outreach
- Band 8-9: Premium budget—retention, upsells, VIP treatment
Segment Your Audiences
Create highly targeted campaigns by combining status, band, and temperature:
- Hot Leads (Band 6) + Very Hot temperature: Immediate sales calls and discount offers
- Engaged (Band 4) + Warm temperature: Case study series and demo invitations
- Returning Customer (Band 8) + Hot temperature: Loyalty programs and upsell campaigns
Time Your Outreach
Temperature tells you when to act:
- Very Hot: Immediate export to ad platforms, instant sales notification
- Hot: Export within 1 hour, same-day follow-up
- Warm: Export within 24 hours, weekly nurture emails
- Cold: Weekly batch exports, monthly education content
Measure What Matters
Track conversion rates by band and temperature to optimize your funnel:
- Which bands convert best? (Focus efforts here)
- How long does it take to move from Engaged to Hot Lead? (Optimize journey)
- What's your temperature distribution? (Are you attracting quality traffic?)
- Which temperatures have the highest ROI? (Refine targeting)
Quick Reference Guide
Status + Temperature Combinations
| Status + Temp | Recommended Action | Priority Level |
|---|---|---|
| New + Cold | Welcome email | Low |
| Engaged + Hot | Demo invitation | Medium-High |
| Hot Lead + Very Hot | Direct sales call | Urgent |
| Customer + Warm | Upsell opportunity | Medium |
| Champion + Very Hot | VIP treatment, referrals | Highest |
