ObserviX Engagement Scoring
Understanding How Behavioral Analytics Measures Visitor Intent
Executive Overview
ObserviX's engagement scoring system is designed to answer one critical question: Which visitors are most likely to become customers?
Our system analyzes every interaction a visitor has with your website — scroll depth, clicks, time on page, form submissions, conversions, and return visits — and assigns a numerical score (0-100) that reflects their level of interest and purchase intent. This score helps your marketing and sales teams prioritize their efforts and budget on the visitors who matter most.
What is Engagement Scoring?
Engagement scoring is a methodology that assigns a numerical value (0-100) to each website visitor based on their behavior. Rather than relying on who they are, it focuses entirely on what they do — making it a purely behavioral signal of intent.
What We Measure:
- Scroll depth — how far they read down each page
- Click interactions — active engagement with your content
- Time on page and engaged duration — both total and active time
- Pages explored — breadth and depth of content consumption
- Form submissions — direct expressions of interest
- Conversion events — completed goals and purchases
- Visit frequency and recency — how often and how recently they return
The Scoring System: Four Levels of Measurement
ObserviX measures engagement at four distinct levels, each producing a score from 0 to 100. Together, these levels build a complete picture of how visitors, sessions, and companies interact with your site.
Page Score — How Deeply Someone Engages With a Single Page
Every page visit is scored based on seven behavioral signals:
| Signal | Weight | What It Captures |
|---|---|---|
| Scroll depth | 25 pts | How far they scrolled through the page |
| Click interactions | 25 pts | Active clicking behavior on the page |
| Dwell time | 15 pts | Time before their first interaction (reading intent) |
| Engaged duration | 15 pts | Active engagement time while on the page |
| Total time on page | 10 pts | Overall time spent, including idle periods |
| Scroll re-reads | 5 pts | Scrolling back up to re-read content (strong interest signal) |
| Form submissions | 5 pts | Filled out any form on the page |
A visitor who scrolls 80% of a page, clicks multiple elements, spends two minutes actively reading, and submits a form will score much higher than someone who bounces after three seconds.
Session Score — Overall Quality of a Single Visit
Each visit (session) is evaluated as a whole to understand the quality of that interaction:
| Signal | Weight | What It Captures |
|---|---|---|
| Scroll depth | 20 pts | Average scroll depth across pages in the session |
| Click count | 15 pts | Total click engagement during the session |
| Engaged duration | 20 pts | Active engagement time across the visit |
| Page breadth | 15 pts | Number of unique pages visited |
| Form submissions | 15 pts | Forms completed during the session |
| Conversion bonus | 15 pts | Bonus for completing a conversion goal |
Important: Bounce sessions (single-page visits with minimal engagement) are hard-capped at 10 points maximum — no matter what other signals are present. Additionally, each error a visitor encounters during a session applies a -2 point penalty.
Visitor Score — Long-Term Engagement Across All Visits
The visitor score looks at the big picture — how a person engages with your site over time across all their sessions:
| Signal | Weight | What It Captures |
|---|---|---|
| Visit frequency | 25 pts | How often they return to your site |
| Time investment | 20 pts | Total time spent across all sessions |
| Conversions | 20 pts | Completed goals and purchases |
| Engagement quality | 15 pts | Average quality of their sessions |
| Content depth | 10 pts | Total unique pages explored over time |
| Recency | 10 pts | How recently they last visited |
A bounce rate penalty of up to -5 points is applied if a high proportion of their sessions are bounces — ensuring that quantity of visits doesn't mask low-quality engagement.
Company Score — Aggregate Engagement From All Visitors at a Company
For B2B analytics, ObserviX aggregates engagement from all identified visitors within the same company:
| Dimension | Weight | What It Captures |
|---|---|---|
| Recency | 30% | How recently any employee visited |
| Volume | 30% | Total sessions and pageviews from all employees |
| Depth | 20% | Average pages per session across the company |
| Breadth | 20% | Number of distinct visitors from the company |
This helps you identify which companies are actively researching your product — even when no single visitor has converted yet.
Engagement Statuses
ObserviX translates the engagement score into eight clear statuses that tell your team exactly where each visitor stands:
| Status | Icon | Score Threshold | What It Means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unknown | ❓ | 0 | No meaningful engagement data yet |
| Detected | 💎 | > 0 | First signs of activity — a new visitor has been recorded |
| Returning | 🔄 | ≥ 11 | Came back at least once — showing repeat interest |
| Engaged | 🔥 | ≥ 26 | Actively exploring your content with meaningful interactions |
| Involved | ⭐ | ≥ 41 | Strong, sustained interest — multiple engagement signals firing |
| Committed | 🚀 | ≥ 61 | High purchase intent with deep, consistent engagement |
| Trusted | 👑 | ≥ 81 | Proven relationship through conversions and continued engagement |
| Champion | 🏆 | ≥ 90 | Your most valuable visitors — highest engagement, brand advocates |
Risk Statuses
In addition to engagement statuses, ObserviX tracks disengagement so you can act before you lose a visitor:
At Risk (30+ days inactive)
Previously active visitor who hasn't engaged recently. Needs a re-engagement campaign.
Churned (90+ days inactive)
Visitor who has stopped engaging for an extended period. Win-back campaign needed.
Reactivated (Returned after being At Risk or Churned)
Previously disengaged visitor who came back. An opportunity to rebuild the relationship.
How Visitors Progress Through the System
Visitor progression isn't always linear. Someone can jump from Detected to Committed if they show strong engagement signals quickly. Here are the typical progression paths:
Typical Journey: Exploration to Conversion
Detected → Returning → Engaged → Involved → Committed → Trusted → Champion
This is the most common path — visitors gradually build engagement through repeat visits, deeper content exploration, and eventual conversion.
Fast-Track Journey: High Intent From Day One
Detected → Engaged → Committed → Trusted
Some visitors arrive with high intent — perhaps referred by a colleague or already familiar with your brand. Their initial sessions show strong engagement signals, and they progress rapidly through statuses.
Loyalty Path: Growing Into a Champion
Trusted → Champion
After reaching Trusted status through conversions and sustained engagement, visitors can ascend to Champion through continued high-quality interactions and repeat conversions.
Risk Path: Losing Engagement
Any Active Status → At Risk → Churned
Without continued engagement, any visitor can move into risk statuses. Early detection at the At Risk stage allows you to intervene with re-engagement campaigns before they churn.
What This Means for Your Marketing Team
Prioritize Your Budget
Not all visitors deserve equal budget allocation. Focus your highest ad spend on visitors in advanced engagement statuses — these are your highest-probability conversions.
- Unknown / Detected: Minimal budget — awareness and educational content only
- Returning / Engaged: Moderate budget — nurture campaigns, build the relationship
- Involved / Committed: High budget — retargeting, sales outreach, demo invitations
- Trusted / Champion: Premium budget — retention, upsells, VIP treatment, referral programs
Segment Your Audiences
Create highly targeted campaigns by combining engagement status with your marketing strategy:
- Committed visitors: Immediate sales outreach, personalized discount offers, demo scheduling
- Engaged visitors: Case study series, webinar invitations, product comparison guides
- Trusted visitors: Loyalty programs, upsell campaigns, exclusive early access
- Champion visitors: Referral programs, co-marketing opportunities, advisory board invitations
Time Your Outreach Based on Momentum
Engagement status tells you when to act. Visitors who are actively climbing in status are showing increasing intent — that's the moment to engage:
- Visitor just moved to Committed: Sales team should reach out within hours
- Visitor moved to Involved: Send a personalized nurture sequence this week
- Visitor at Engaged and climbing: Add to targeted retargeting audiences
- Visitor at At Risk: Trigger re-engagement campaign immediately
Measure What Matters
Track these key metrics to optimize your funnel:
- Which statuses convert best? (Focus efforts here)
- How long does it take visitors to progress from Engaged to Committed? (Optimize the journey)
- What's your status distribution? (Are you attracting quality traffic?)
- Which content drives visitors to higher statuses? (Double down on what works)
