Automated Engagement Status Calculation
Quick Summary
Engagement Status is calculated automatically from behavioral signals at four levels: page, session, visitor, and company. Each level produces a score from 0 to 100, and the visitor-level score determines the engagement status. No manual work required.
Core Insight
How It's Calculated
The scoring engine evaluates engagement at four levels. Each produces a 0–100 score.
Page-Level Score (0–100)
| Signal | What It Measures | Max Points |
|---|---|---|
| Scroll depth | How far they scrolled (% of page) | 25 |
| Click count | Number of clicks (saturates at 5) | 25 |
| Dwell time | Time on page (saturates at 30s) | 15 |
| Engaged duration | Active interaction (saturates at 60s) | 15 |
| Total duration | Full time on page (saturates at 120s) | 10 |
| Scroll re-reads | Scroll-ups indicating re-reading | 5 |
| Form submission | Any form submitted on the page | 5 |
Session-Level Score (0–100)
| Signal | What It Measures | Max Points |
|---|---|---|
| Scroll depth | Deepest scroll across all pages | 20 |
| Click count | Total clicks (saturates at 10) | 15 |
| Engaged duration | Active time (saturates at 3 min) | 20 |
| Page breadth | Unique pages visited (saturates at 4) | 15 |
| Form submissions | Forms submitted during session | 15 |
| Conversion bonus | Completed a conversion goal | 15 |
| Error penalty | JS errors encountered | −2 each |
Bounce sessions are hard-capped at a maximum score of 10.
Visitor-Level Score (0–100) — determines engagement status
| Signal | What It Measures | Max Points |
|---|---|---|
| Visit frequency | Number of sessions (5 pts each) | 25 |
| Time investment | Total duration (saturates at 10 min) | 20 |
| Conversions | Completed goals (10 pts each) | 20 |
| Engagement quality | Rate of engaged sessions | 15 |
| Content depth | Total pageviews (saturates at 20) | 10 |
| Recency | Days since last visit (decays daily) | 10 |
| Bounce penalty | High bounce rate reduces score | −5 max |
Company-Level Score (0–100)
| Signal | Weight | Formula |
|---|---|---|
| Recency | 30% | Decays by 5 pts per day since last visit |
| Volume | 30% | Sessions × 15 + pageviews × 3 (cap 100) |
| Depth | 20% | Pages per session × 20 (cap 100) |
| Breadth | 20% | Unique visitors × 25 (cap 100) |
Status Definitions
Status is determined purely by the visitor-level score crossing these thresholds:
Growth Stages
| Status | Score Threshold | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| Unknown | 0 | No engagement data recorded |
| Detected 💎 | > 0 | First engagement signal captured |
| Returning 🔄 | ≥ 11 | Repeat visits, moderate engagement |
| Engaged 🔥 | ≥ 26 | Meaningful interaction depth |
| Involved ⭐ | ≥ 41 | Sustained multi-signal engagement |
| Committed 🚀 | ≥ 61 | Strong recurring engagement patterns |
| Trusted 👑 | ≥ 81 | Exceptional engagement depth |
| Champion 🏆 | ≥ 90 | Top-tier engagement across all dimensions |
Risk Stages (For Existing Engaged Visitors)
| Status | What Triggers It | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| At Risk ⚠️ | Inactive 30+ days | May be losing interest |
| Churned 💔 | Inactive 90+ days | Stopped engaging |
| Reactivated 🎉 | At Risk/Churned visitor returned | Won back! |
What Drives Status Transitions
Every transition is driven by the visitor-level score reaching the next threshold. There are no event-based triggers — it's purely score-driven.
Unknown → Detected Any engagement signal (page view, click, scroll) moves the score above 0.
Detected → Returning Score reaches 11. Typically requires repeat visits with moderate interaction.
Returning → Engaged Score reaches 26. Requires meaningful depth — consistent clicks, scroll engagement, and time investment across visits.
Engaged → Involved Score reaches 41. Sustained engagement across multiple signals — frequency, duration, content depth, and conversion activity all contribute.
Involved → Committed Score reaches 61. Strong recurring patterns — high visit frequency, significant time investment, good engagement quality, and likely conversions.
Committed → Trusted Score reaches 81. Exceptional engagement depth across nearly all scoring dimensions.
Trusted → Champion Score reaches 90. Top-tier engagement — the visitor consistently scores high on frequency, time, conversions, engagement quality, and recency.
Why It Matters
Engagement Status = Behavior, Not Identity
Status is driven by what visitors actually do across every interaction:
- More clicks, deeper scrolls, longer sessions = higher page and session scores
- Repeat visits and sustained engagement = higher visitor score
- Score thresholds determine status automatically — no manual classification
A first-time visitor who barely scrolls = Detected (score ~2–5)
Same visitor returns 4 times, reads deeply, submits a form = Involved or Committed (score 41–70+)
Practical Value
The multi-level scoring system provides granular, objective segmentation at every level — from individual page interactions to company-wide engagement patterns. Teams can identify high-engagement prospects (Committed, Trusted) based on real behavioral signals, prioritize outreach using score-driven status rather than guesswork, and monitor engagement health through risk stages. The transparent, threshold-based logic ensures consistent evaluation across the platform.
